The title of the story and the main character, Black Jack (real name: Hazama Kuroo), is an unlicensed doctor who dramatically performs miraculous medical procedures in various situations. Black Jack provides his patients with advanced medical skills and charges his clients huge fees in exchange for miraculously reviving patients who are on the verge of death.
Black Jack's choices are always determined by his own rules. His reasons for undertaking a surgery may be logical, of course, but in most cases they are intuitive and largely based on his own rules. In many cases, the client's thoughts, feelings, and attitudes are the key to whether or not Black Jack is moved by them.
Although "life and death" is the main theme of this drama, it can be enjoyed by both children and adults as a drama that teaches "truth, goodness, and beauty（真善美）" in everyday human life.
